Comparing Bayes factors and hierarchical inference for testing general relativity with gravitational waves

چکیده
In the context of testing general relativity with gravitational waves, constraints obtained multiple events are typically combined either through a hierarchical formalism or though multiplicative Bayes factor. We show that well-known dependence factors on analysis priors in regions parameter space without likelihood support can lead to strong confidence favor incorrect conclusions when one employs $\mathcal{O}(1)$ ambivalent as they depend sensitively priors, which rarely set principled way; additionally, $>\mathcal{O}({10}^{3})$ be conclusion depending many multiplied, and specifically much wider than underlying population. The instead infers ensemble distribution individual beyond-general-relativity does not suffer from this problem, generically converges correct conclusion. Rather naive multiplication, more reliable factor computed analysis. present number toy models showing practice multiplying conclusions.

Will gravitational waves confirm Einstein’s General Relativity?
Even if Einstein’s General Relativity achieved a great success and overcame lots of experimental tests, it also showed some shortcomings and flaws which today advise theorists to ask if it is the definitive theory of gravity. In this proceeding paper it is shown that, if advanced projects on the detection of Gravitational Waves (GWs) will improve their sensitivity, allowing to perform a GWs ast...
متن کاملGravitational Waves and Black Holes An Introduction to General Relativity
In these lectures general relativity is outlined as the classical field theory of gravity, emphasizing physical phenomena rather than formalism. Dynamical solutions representing traveling waves as well as stationary fields like those of black holes are discussed. Their properties are investigated by studying the geodesic structure of the corresponding space-times, as representing the motion of ...
متن کاملDistinct family of colliding gravitational waves in general relativity.
We present a new family of exact solutions for the Einstein equations that describes colliding gravitational shock waves with cross polarization. In the limit of single polarization it reduces to a family that, up to a transformation of its metric functions, is distinct from the well-known Szekeres family. Furthermore, this family of solutions does not belong to the largest family found recentl...
متن کاملProperties of gravitational waves in Cosmological General Relativity
The 5D Cosmological General Relativity theory developed by Carmeli reproduces all of the results that have been successfully tested for Einstein’s 4D theory. However the Carmeli theory because of its fifth dimension, the velocity of the expanding universe, predicts something different for the propagation of gravity waves on cosmological distance scales. This analysis indicates that gravitationa...
متن کاملA general Bayes exponential inference model for accelerated life testing
9 This article develops a general Bayes inference model for accelerated life testing assuming failure times at each stress level are exponentially distributed. Using the approach, Bayes 11 point estimates as well as probability statements for use-stress life parameters may be inferred from the following testing scenarios: regular life testing, 7xed-stress testing, step-stress testing, 13 pro7le...
